چکیده

This paper reviews tunnel spectroscopy of fractional quantum Hall edges using cleaved-edge overgrown devices. Beginning with an intuitive introduction to various experimental and theoretical aspects, the device structure is reviewed, and the experimental result of a continuum of powerlaw tunneling exponents is revisited. The unanticipated behavior of the exponent with fractional filling factor is described, and all subsequent theoretical explanations for these results are laid out for comparison. Finally, we propose new directions for experimentally resolving the remaining questions. c © 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. PACS: 73.43.Jn; 73.43.-f; 73.22.Lp

Exploring the fractional quantum Hall effect with electron tunneling

In this talk I present a summary of recent work on tunnel junctions of a fractional quantum Hall fluid and an electron reservoir, a Fermi liquid. I consider first the case of a single point contact. This is a an exactly solvable problem from which much can be learned. I also discuss in some detail how these solvable junction problems can be used to understand many aspects of the recent electron...

Edge states in graphene quantum dots: Fractional quantum Hall effect analogies and differences at zero magnetic field

We investigate the way that the degenerate manifold of midgap edge states in quasicircular graphene quantum dots with zigzag boundaries supports, under free-magnetic-field conditions, strongly correlated manybody behavior analogous to the fractional quantum Hall effect FQHE , familiar from the case of semiconductor heterostructures in high-magnetic fields. Systematic exact-diagonalization EXD n...

Local thermometry of neutral modes on the quantum Hall edge

Electrons in two dimensions and strong magnetic fields can form an insulating two-dimensional system with conducting one-dimensional channels along the edge. Electron interactions in these edges can lead to independent transport of charge and heat, even in opposite directions. Here, we heat the outer edge of such a quantum Hall system using a quantum point contact. By placing quantum dots upstr...

Dephasing Due to a Fluctuating Fractional Quantum Hall Edge Current

The dephasing rate of an electron level in a quantum dot, placed next to a fluctuating edge current in the fractional quantum Hall effect, is considered. Using perturbation theory, we first show that this rate has an anomalous dependence on the bias voltage applied to the neighboring quantum point contact, because of the Luttinger liquid physics which describes the fractional Hall fluid. Next, ...

We analyze the effect that the Coulomb interaction has on the edge excita-tions of an electron gas confined in a bar of thickness W , and in presence of a magnetic field corresponding to filling factor 1 Quantum Hall effect. We find that the long-range interaction between the edges leads the system to a ground state with a quasi-long range order, similar to a Charge Density Wave. The spectral d...
